A 60-year-old man has tragically died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Namizimu Forest Reserve, near Kwilasya Village under Traditional Authority Namabvi in Mangochi District.
Mangochi Police Spokesperson Amina Tepani Daudi has told Dzimwe Online that the deceased, identified as Meleke Jeke, had gone to his maize garden near the forest on the morning of April 7, 2025, to check on his crops and protect them from baboons.
Daudi said “While in the field, a wild elephant(not in the picture) suddenly emerged and attacked him, resulting in his instant death”.
Daudi stated that the matter was immediately reported to Lungwena Police Unit. Police officers, accompanied by a medical practitioner, visited the scene and conducted a postmortem examination, which confirmed that death was due to multiple fractures and internal bleeding sustained during the elephant attack.
Meanwhile, police have notified the Department of National Parks and Wildlife for appropriate action.
Meleke Jeke hailed from Kwilasya Village, Traditional Authority Namabvi in Mangochi District.
